Professional Development at the Arts in Motion (AIM) Academy, Salisbury University
I had the great pleasure today to work with an amazing group Wicomico County teachers at the annual Arts In Motion (AIM) Academy at Salisbury University, organized by Dr. Brandy Terrill.
They were more than willing to take a few risks and try out some beatboxing with the goal of discovering connections between math and music. The workshops consisted of arts integration training followed by lesson plan development.
We learned some basic beatboxing techniques, worked with the rhythm chart, and scaffolded our way to group performances. Along the way we developed tons of lesson stems that the teachers used as inspiration in their subsequent lesson plan writing. We also discovered numerous music-math connections. Overall, post-assessment data showed a definite trend in teacher’s awareness of and capcity to exploit music math connections in their own teaching. This is the ultimate goal of our work as teaching artists: to empower teachers to teach through the arts.
